As a Venezuelan artist living in the U.S., Alexandra Alvarez depicts her life between two cities: New York City and Jersey City.
Her first solo show, “Crossing Borders to Get Back to My Roots” at the Art 150 Lobby Gallery explores the female and migrant experience, and as the shows name suggests, honor her ancestral roots. The show can be seen from Friday, Dec. 2, to Friday, Dec. 30.
The exhibition includes an autobiographical and cultural artistic production of the artist that ranges from the experience of migrating, confronting loneliness, mental health, rebirth, and reunion with their cultural roots.
The works by Alvarez come from her inner poetic experience by using the pigments of acrylic and mixed media to revive the colors of her Caribbean wonder. Her inspiration for her work is nature, which helps connect her with the creative force of God.
Alavarez has lived in the U.S. for the past seven years. She has developed her artistic work around combining elements destined to generate a discourse with a powerful message.
With “Back to My roots,” Alvarez has teamed up with The Good Project to support their mission to preserve the rainforest and protect the Yanomami people in Venezuela. The Good Project will have a presentation at Art 150 on Saturday, Dec. 10.
Her works have been exhibited in Venezuela and in different cities around the world such as Barcelona, Buenos Aires, Jersey City, Pennsylvania, Portland, Southampton, and New York City. Her works are in private collections in Venezuela, Spain, and United States.
The event will debut at the upcoming JC Fridays Festival on December 2nd from 6 to 9 p.m. The gallery will also be open on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 3 and Dec. 4, with live painting from 1 to 5 p.m. This will continue on Saturday, Dec. 10, and there will be a Paint and Sip for Kids and Adults on Sunday, Dec. 11, from 1 to 5 p.m.
